Our ‘announcement’ – posted by Karen Nitkin on Facebook on 8/24/23
Let us go then, you and I …
In a few days, David and I will start our drive to LA, where we will pick up our new travel trailer and then drive it back.
We’ll stay at state parks and vineyards and national forests, eat in diners and brewpubs, go to local concerts and museums, and of course run and hike – all while continuing our professional responsibilities.
We chose a Happier Camper Traveler, mostly because it’s light enough for our car to pull – I didn’t want to buy a truck. It has a little kitchen and bathroom, and room for us to work while we travel. We aren’t becoming permanent digital nomads, but we do hope to take several trips a year.
We named our little trailer Prufrock, after the T.S. Eliot poem, The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock, a gorgeous meditation on choices and regrets and aging. Maybe you’ve heard one of the more famous lines, “Do I dare to eat a peach?”
So, off we go.
We’ll “wear the bottoms of our trousers rolled,” and eat in “sawdust restaurants with oyster-shells,” and maybe hear “the mermaids singing, each to each.” We’ll enjoy all the peaches we want. We’ll make an Instagram page soon, if you want to follow along.
As Prufrock advises:
Oh, do not ask, “What is it?”
Let us go and make our visit.
